Maintenance & Care

  • How do I sharpen D2?

Use diamond abrasives or ceramic stones—they cut through the hard carbides efficiently. Standard aluminum oxide stones will work, but they’ll wear faster. We recommend a diamond rod for field touch-ups.
  • How do I sharpen D2? It feels like it never gets sharp.

Yeah, D2's a beast—those hard carbides that make it wear-resistant also make it a pain to sharpen with regular stones. You need diamond abrasives or ceramic stones to actually cut the carbides. Aluminum oxide stones? They'll work, but you'll be there all day, and your stone will wear out fast. For field touch-ups, a diamond rod is your best friend. And remember: D2 takes a screaming sharp edge once you get there—it just needs the right tools.
  • How do I prevent rust on my D2 blade?

Treat it like a cast iron skillet—not a stainless steel spoon. After use, especially if you've been cutting acidic stuff (fruit, meat, sweaty tasks), rinse with water, dry it immediately (like, right away), and hit it with a light coat of mineral oil or food-safe wax. In humid climates, check it every few weeks. D2 isn't high-maintenance—it just wants a little attention.
  • Can I put my D2 knife in the dishwasher?

Whoa there—absolutely not. Dishwasher detergent is harsh, the heat can mess with the handle materials, and water jets will bang it around. Plus, moisture trapped in the pivot equals rust city. Hand wash, dry immediately, and your D2 will outlast you.
  • How do I clean and maintain my Damascus knife? Will it rust?

Great question—and the answer is: treat it like a cast iron skillet, not a stainless steel spoon. Damascus can rust if neglected, especially the high-carbon layers. After use, wash with mild soap and water (yes, water's fine), dry it immediately—like, right away—and apply a light coat of mineral oil or food-safe wax. Store it dry. Do that, and your grandkids will fight over it someday.
  • Can I sharpen a Damascus knife myself, or do I need a pro?

You can absolutely sharpen it yourself—just know that the pattern won't sharpen off (that's etched in). Use a good whetstone or diamond sharpener, maintain a consistent angle, and you're good. The only thing? Don't use an electric grinder unless you really know what you're doing—heat can mess with the temper. Start with a medium grit, finish with fine, and strop it for that razor edge.
  • Does VG10 develop a patina over time?

Not really—and that's one of its superpowers. Unlike carbon steel or D2, VG10's high chromium content means it doesn't form a reactive patina -3-7. It stays bright and shiny pretty much forever with minimal care. If you're the type who loves the "lived-in" look of a blade that's seen some miles, VG10 might feel too clean for you. But if you want a knife that looks as good in five years as it does today? VG10's your huckleberry.
  • Can I put my VG10 knife in the dishwasher?

Whoa there—absolutely not. Look, I know VG10 is stainless, but the dishwasher is a knife's worst enemy. Hot water, harsh detergents, banging against other stuff—it'll mess up the handle, dull the edge, and yeah, even stainless can get funky if moisture sits in the pivot. Hand wash with mild soap, dry immediately, and your VG10 will outlast you. Trust me on this.
  • How do I sharpen VG10? I heard it's hard to sharpen.

Let's bust that myth right now. Compared to super-steels like S35VN or M390, VG10 is actually pretty easy to sharpen -9. It's harder than cheap steels (60-62 HRC), so it takes a little more work than 8Cr13MoV—but that's the trade-off for holding an edge way longer. Use ceramic stones or diamond abrasives for best results. For field touch-ups, a ceramic rod works great. And here's the secret: VG10 responds beautifully to stropping. A few passes on leather, and you'll bring back that razor edge without hitting the stones.
  • Is VG10 stainless? Will it rust?

VG10 is true stainless steel—15% chromium means it resists corrosion like a champ -3-7-9. But—and this is important—"stainless" isn't "stain-proof." If you leave it soaking in saltwater overnight or put it through the dishwasher (please don't), it can spot. Here's the good news: VG10 is incredibly low-maintenance. Rinse it, wipe it dry, and you're done. It's basically the "set it and forget it" of knife steels.
